How to Make an Antique Lampshade
- 1). Trace one of the lampshade panels onto the styrene. Cut it out and use it to trace and cut three more panels.
- 2). Lay the fabric out on a firm, level surface. Peel the backing off the styrene panels and place the panels, sticky side down on the wrong side of the fabric. Press lightly to make sure the panels are firmly attached to the fabric. Cut out the fabric with the panels attached.
- 3). Clip the four panels to the lampshade frame with the clothespins. Trim to fit. Set three of the four panels aside and apply a thin strip of glue around one side of the lampshade frame. Working quickly, attach the panel to the frame with the clothespins to hold firmly in place. If you have an old lampshade you can also put that to good use. The Lampshadeguru.com suggests, "If you own an old lamp shade then you must take it apart to get the wire base. Be careful not to wreck the structure of the lamp shade while removing the covering. It is best to use an "X-Acto knife" as these work the best. This will be the base of your new lamp shade."
Continue working quickly and attach the other three panels in the same manner. Wrap a piece of wide ribbon around the circumfrence of the lampshade and clip firmly together with a clothespin to hold the panels in place as they dry. Allow approximately 20 minutes drying time. - 4). Measure the top and bottom of the lampshade and cut two pieces of grosgrain ribbon according to the measurements you've taken. This will be used for the top and bottom trim.
- 5). Measure the height of the lampshade and cut four strips of pressure sensitive tape according to this measurement. Place the pieces of tape onto the wrong side of the fabric. Cut out the strips leaving about a quarter inch extra fabric on each side. Wrap the extra fabric around the strips and glue to the underside.
- 6). Remove the ribbon that you secured around the perimeter of the lamp in step three. Glue the fabric covered tape strips vertically to each of the four corners at the seams.
- 7). Using the grosgrain ribbon that you cut in step number four, run a strip of glue around the top edge of the lampshade and press the ribbon onto it, leaving half the ribbon extending above the top. Run another strip of glue along the top edge of the inside of the lamp and fold the ribbon over to secure it to the inside. Repeat this step on the bottom.
