How to Grow Soybeans in Maryland
- 1). Decide on a location to plant the soybean seeds outside after the last frost date for that area of Maryland, which is approximately May 15. Plant the seeds in direct sunlight and in soil that is warm--approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit--and has been enriched with manure or compost prior to planting.
- 2). Plant the seeds 1 to 2 inches deep in the soil, 2 inches apart in rows that are 20 to 30 inches apart. This distance is necessary to provide room for the plants to grow. Plant four to eight soybean plants per person in your family.
- 3). Add fertilizer to the soil during the planting process, mixing in with natural soil for better growing results.
- 4). Water the plants well immediately after planting and be sure to water again in two to four days unless rainfall occurs. Provide enough water to saturate the soil, but do not over water.
- 5). Add fertilizer and water the plants regularly. Check for insect damage periodically and add an insecticide if it becomes an issue.
- 6). Harvest the soybeans when the pods become full, usually in October or November. Pull off the beans and place them in a boiling pot of water. Boil the beans for 20 minutes and allow to cool. Squeeze the pods carefully and remove the beans.
