Help Paying for College Books
- You can apply most grants and scholarships toward the purchase of books as well as tuition. A Pell Grant can be used to pay for books. Some athletic scholarships also cover the cost of books. Look at online scholarship databases for additional grants and scholarships for which you might qualify.

You can use student loans to pay for the cost of books. After covering tuition at the beginning of the semester, your school should issue you the remainder of your student loans. Some schools wait until after the final drop day to issue such funds. If this is the case, the school might offer a temporary book loan to help you cover the costs. Another option is to put the books on a credit card until your student loan money comes through. If you choose that option, pay off the full credit card amount immediately after receiving the loan funds. - Many students buy books from the campus bookstore. However, several online sites and off-campus bookstores buy and sell college textbooks, and generally you will pay less than at the campus store. You can save money by purchasing used books instead of new ones. Before buying a used book, look through it to verify that the book is in acceptable condition and that it is not too marked up, which can make it difficult to use. E-books tend to be less expensive, and many textbooks are available electronically. You may be able to find free e-versions of literary texts, too.
- Many textbooks are available at the college library. You can read these books on-site, however, because they are not available to check out. If you do the majority of your studying at the library anyway, this option might not be too inconvenient. This also is an option to hold you over until your loan money arrives. Other solutions: Share a textbook with a friend or ask if you can borrow a copy from your professor or teacher's assistant.
