Help Paying for College Books

    Grants and Scholarships

    • You can apply most grants and scholarships toward the purchase of books as well as tuition. A Pell Grant can be used to pay for books. Some athletic scholarships also cover the cost of books. Look at online scholarship databases for additional grants and scholarships for which you might qualify.

    Shop Around

    • Many students buy books from the campus bookstore. However, several online sites and off-campus bookstores buy and sell college textbooks, and generally you will pay less than at the campus store. You can save money by purchasing used books instead of new ones. Before buying a used book, look through it to verify that the book is in acceptable condition and that it is not too marked up, which can make it difficult to use. E-books tend to be less expensive, and many textbooks are available electronically. You may be able to find free e-versions of literary texts, too.

    Borrow Books

    • Many textbooks are available at the college library. You can read these books on-site, however, because they are not available to check out. If you do the majority of your studying at the library anyway, this option might not be too inconvenient. This also is an option to hold you over until your loan money arrives. Other solutions: Share a textbook with a friend or ask if you can borrow a copy from your professor or teacher's assistant.
