If you have recently adopted a cat or kitten, then you'll probably be wondering about the right nutrition for your new pet.
Perhaps you already have a cat, and have read one of many recent news stories that highlight the poor quality of supermarket cat food.
Either way, with a little knowledge it is possible to provide your cat with a high quality, healthy, well balanced diet without breaking the bank.
A healthy diet is as important to a cat's health as it is to a human's health.
The right diet will keep you cat fit, energetic and prevent diseases.
However when you take a trip down the supermarket pet food aisle, you will find an overwhelming number of choices.
The most common type of cat food is canned or pouched wet food.
Your cat would probably favor this to dry food, however it is definitely not the best for your kittys health.
Wet food does nothing to help your cat's dental hygiene, plus it smells awful and can be inconvenient to store.
Nobody wants to open the fridge or cupboard to be greeted by the smell of cat food.
This is why dry cat food is the finest food for your cat.
Dry cat food is much better for your pets teeth and also has the right combination of nutrients.
Here are some useful tips for buying dry cat food: 1.
Lets face it, you get what you pay for to a certain extent.
If you buy cheap cat food, it will be lower quality.
However if you travel to dedicated pet superstores you will find dozens of different high quality cat food at varying prices.
Use common sense; if the packaging is cheap looking, then the meat inside won't be any better.
2.
Check the ingredients list.
Often the label will simply say "meat" or "bone meal", without giving the details of its origin.
It should give more details such as "chicken meat".
If the label says animal by products then this is acceptable, providing it is not a main ingredient.
Animal by products contain valuable vitamins for your cat.
3.
Whilst checking the ingredients be sure to look out for preservatives such as ethoxyouin, which can be harmful to your cat.
If the cat food is full of preservatives it is not something that should be a part of your pets daily diet.
However, preservatives derived from Vitamin E are ok.
If your cat doesn't particularly like dry food, then consider mixing in something else such as a can of tuna in spring water, or some left over meat from the family meal.
This will make mealtimes more exiting for your pet and the diet will have more variety.
Using these simple rules your cat will be able to enjoy delicious meals and a healthy life.
