Can Crinum Take Shade?
- Typically, crinum lilies grow in partial to full sun exposures in the garden provided the soil is consistently and evenly moist. Ample sunlight produces a uniformly shaped plant, lots of leaves, strong bulbs, and abundant and reliable flowering each year.
- If few or no flowers on the crinum don't concern you, plant the bulbs in a partially shaded location. Selections with variegated, red or other colorful leaves will lose pigments in dim light. Also, expect plants to look weak and lean toward the light with foliage that flops rather than growing upright and firm.
- If you garden in a subtropical region where sunlight intensity is strong and the growing season is long, Crinum lilies will perform well in partial shade, including flowering and having firm leaves. If the foliage doesn't receive enough light, the plant slowly degrades, as it's not making and storing enough food.
