How to Prepare for Above Ground Pool Installation
- 1). Decide where the pool will be placed. Most people choose to place their above-ground swimming pools in the back yard. Start by visually inspecting the area where the pool will be installed. Make a mental note of any rocks, stones and any other debris on the ground. Also be sure to note the distance from where the pool will be installed to other items such as trees, swing sets, decks, patios or plants.
- 2). Clear the land where the pool will be installed. Remove anything that could harm the pool or impede installation. Be sure to clear any sharp rocks, sticks or other items that could potentially puncture the pool.
- 3). Measure the area of where you will be placing the pool. Using a tape measure, measure the diameter of the area that the pool will be placed and mark the area. Marking the area is most commonly done with spray paint. Be sure to mark all the way around the area.
- 4). Dig the area. Using shovels, dig out the area where the pool will be placed. The dirt will need to be hauled away, so pile it all in one area to make the hauling easier. For the best results, use the large shovel to start with and use the small shovel when you are nearing the end of your digging.
- 5). Measure the hole. It is best to measure the hole periodically to make sure you get to the desired depth. For the best possible pool placement, most manufacturers recommend the hole be only about 2 inches deep.
- 6). Make sure the hole is level. Place the level on the ground every 6 inches to determine if the hole is uniform. If any areas are not level, simply dig a bit or add dirt to the area to make it level. Use a garden hose to slightly dampen the area before placing the level on the ground.
- 7). Wait at least 24 hours. After leveling the hole, it is best to leave it alone for at least 24 hours before checking it again. By waiting, it allows for any natural shifting of the ground. Check the hole with the level again and make sure it is still level. If the area is still level, the ground is ready and the above ground pool can be installed.
