How to Make a Home Safe for a Limited Mobility Elderly

    • 1). Clear all exits and passageways. Clutter or poorly placed furniture can be hazardous to those whose mobility is restricted. Arrange cords for lamps, fans and other electrical items so that walkways are kept clear. You may need to rearrange furniture so that outlets are more accessible and extension cords are not needed.

    • 2). Eliminate slippery conditions. Apply double-faced adhesive carpet tape or rubber matting to backs of rugs and runners that might slip. Make sure that any rugs that already have slip-resistant backing are in good condition. Provide non-skid mats or abrasive strips in bathtubs and showers to make slippery surfaces easier to navigate. Install grab bars in bathtubs and showers. The NACHI recommends two bars per shower or tub.

    • 3). Purchase a sturdy step stool---for elderly people who are capable of using one---to reach high shelves. According to the CPSC, many people over the age of 65 fall when they try to stand on chairs.

    • 4). Brighten the environment. Install bulbs that have the maximum wattage recommended for lamps and fixtures throughout the house, especially in stairways. If you do not know the correct wattage, use 60-watt bulbs or lower. Use night lights in hallways, bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms that might be visited during the night. Make sure that light switches are located near bathroom doors and that lamps or switches are within reach of the elderly person's bed. A glow switch that can be seen in the dark is especially helpful. Install light switches at the top and bottom of stairs or provide flashlights at the top and bottom.

    • 5). Place a telephone within reach of the elderly person's bed.

    • 6). Safeguard the steps. Check carpeting on stairs to be sure it's tight. Loose carpeting can lead to accidents. Use white paint to highlight edges of outdoor steps. This will make the steps more noticeable, especially at night. Install extra lighting near outdoor steps, if necessary. Clear all stairways, inside and outside, of any obstructions.
