Career Management: Don"t Lose Your Accomplishments!
To get the most out of a robust career plan you must document all your accomplishments.
In addition, your atta-boy/girl file should contain positive email notes, letters and other information from pleased customers, supervisors, outside organizations and vendors.
In one situation a mid-level manager got a positive remark in the chairman's letter in the company annual report.
You need to document all of your accomplishments because you never know when you have to write a great resume.
New employers will be interested in your accomplishments rather than your duties and responsibilities.
Many performance review systems require you list your accomplishments for the year.
And to list your accomplishments against a list of goals for planned projects.
Don't expect your manager to have a record better than you have.
You are building your personal brand and in support of this effort your accomplishments and body of work are important aspects of this effort.
You'll also need to list all new skills learned, study and training completed, books read and any seminars and workshops attended.
All are important in managing your career plan.
Keep the file up to date.
If you want to scan appropriate documents into your computer that's all right but keep a physical record also.
If the computer belongs to your employer that could cause some problems so keep a secure record outside of the work place.
All of your accomplishments should share the following: They should be measurable.
How much money did they save? Did you do something faster? Did you cut costs? Did you do something under budget? Did you increase business? Did you provide a higher level of customer service? There will be others but all should be measurable.
If you do not have an exact number do your best to establish an estimate of the benefits.
You want to measure what the accomplishment did to benefit the business.
How did it help the customer? If your customers were internal what did you do to better serve them? Write out how you helped the business.
Over time these facts may become fuzzy and you want to be able to go back to the file and have a clear picture of your accomplishments.
If you were participating as a member of a team that's an entirely different role than managing the team.
State the overall accomplishments the team achieved but list your role in the overall effort.
Document this information and put it in your atta-boy/girl file.
Career management is driven by accomplishments.
As you move from position to position within your company it's very easy to overlook something that might be critical in earning an internal promotion or the change for a job with another employer or to make an effective career change.
