    • 1). Treat the infested pet first, since his fur is the source of the fleas. Pour a couple drops of spot-on flea treatment formula directly onto the pet's shoulder blades. Use a flea treatment formula recommended by a veterinarian, following the directions precisely. Treat your pet with the flea formula regularly as directed to make sure fleas don't return.

    • 2). Launder the pet's stuffed toys, bedding and garments in very hot water to kill fleas. Follow the washing instructions on the items' care tags. Launder these items regularly to keep fleas away.

    • 3). Sweep your home thoroughly, particularly in regions where your pet eats, sleeps and visits regularly to extract flea eggs, larvae and pupae. Vacuum the carpet, furniture upholstery and throw rugs weekly to prevent flea infestation. Discard the vacuum's disposable bag in a garbage container outdoors after vacuuming.

    • 4). Apply an insecticide containing methoprene or pyriproxyfen onto areas susceptible to fleas such as carpet, furniture and baseboards. Follow the insecticide manufacturer's directions. Let the insecticide fully dry before introducing the pet to the area. Reapply the insecticide two weeks later to kill any developed eggs and pupae previously unaffected by the first application. Follow the prior application techniques.

    • 5). Treat your entire home with a chemical insecticide if necessary to eliminate any remaining fleas. Open all windows to minimize fumes, and wear a breathing mask to prevent chemical exposure. Do not expose the pet to the insecticide.
