How to Calculate Grid Reference

104 7
    • 1). Read the value of the vertical grid line to the left of the point for which a grid reference is being calculated. Estimate the distance between this line and the next, breaking the gap between them into tenths.

    • 2). Write down the line number and the number of tenths to the next line. For example, if the line to the left of the point is 12 and you estimate the point to be half way, or five-tenths, between that line and the next, write down 12 and then five to read 125

    • 3). Read the value of the horizontal grid line below the point for which a grid reference is being calculated. Estimate the distance between this line and the next line, breaking the gap into tenths.

    • 4). Write down the line number and the number of tenths to the next line. As an example, if the line below the point is 34, and you estimate the point to be eight-tenths of the way between that line and the next, write down 348.

    • 5). Combine the two numbers to form the grid reference, putting the vertical line number first. In this example, the grid reference is 125348.
