You need to find the right type of peat moss product for your particular job. - Fine or superfine peat moss is free of sticks and chunky materials and is often mixed with sand. Peat moss screened for impurities is used for golf-course greens and private and corporate landscaping, and according to canadianpeatmoss.com, fine peat moss "contributes to the water holding capacity of the greens," promotes uniform germination and provides the seedlings with an excellent rooting environment. When mixed with sand, the fine peat creates a top dress soil that will incorporate easily into the soil. Prices of fine peat moss products vary considerably depending on the particular blend and quantity purchased.
- According to the composting company Sun-Mar, "Fine peat moss will compact and leave very little in the way of porosity in the compost, which slows composting. The sharpened hemp pieces cut into the compost, destroying lumps and causing the compost to break down even faster. For additional bulk Sun-Mar recommends incorporating wood shavings into your peat moss mixture for composting toilets. The shavings used in this setting should not be larger than 1 square inch to avoid clogging. Sun-Mar suggests a ratio of 60 percent wood shavings to 40 percent peat moss.
