The Treme Gumbo Festival
What, Where, When:
The Treme Gumbo Festival is a two day festival held in March and is a production of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. The festival has all the ingredients of a great New Oreans festival, food, music and artisans. The Festival is held at the Jazz & Heritage Center, located at 1225 North Rampart Street. It starts at 11am and goes until 5pm both days.
The Food:
As you can tell by the name, there's a lot of gumbo to be eaten at the festival and always one of New Orleans' great chefs to give you lessons on how to make a good gumbo.
Some typical gumbos are okra, kitchen sink filé, Cajun with andouille sausage and a dark roux, and gumbo z’herbes.
The Music:
There are always some of the best New Orleans musicians on hand to provide great music. Some of those who play at the festival often are Kermit Ruffins, Shamarr Allen, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue and Walter “Wolfman” Washington.
The Jazz & Heritage Holiday Bazaar:
Jazz & Heritage Holiday Bazaar. It’s the only place outside of Jazz Fest where you can get official festival t-shirts and other merchandise, plus a large assortment of CDs and locally produced, hand-made clothing, jewelry and home furnishings.
