How to Determine Evaporation Rates in Pools

104 17
    • 1). Measure the distance from your pool's current water level to the top of the pool. Use a ruler or tape measure for this measurement.

    • 2). Take a second measurement after five days. Try to measure the water level at the same place as the first measurement. Keep the measurement in inches and subtract the second measurement from the first one.

    • 3). Divide the measurement by 12 to convert the inches to feet.

    • 4). Calculate the surface area of your swimming pool. Multiply the length times the width for square and rectangle pools or diameter times pi for a round pool.

    • 5). Multiply the pool's surface area by the figure from Step 3. This results in the total cubic feet lost to water evaporation.

    • 6). Multiply the figure from Step 5 by 7.48, which is the conversion figure for one cubic foot to a single gallon. The result is the total gallons of water lost to water evaporation.
