How to Sterilize Piercing Needles
- 1). Label each sterile pouch with the date, the word "needle" to describe the contents of the pouch, and the needle's size. Use a pen or marker to label the pouch.
- 2). Don a pair of latex gloves. If you have an allergy to latex, use nitrile gloves. Pull the blue part of the sterile pouch away from the white paper part to place the needle inside. Place the needle in the pouch by pointing the sharp end down into the pouch. Center the needle in between the blue and paper side to prevent snagging or puncturing the paper or blue side of the sterile pouch.
- 3). Remove the protective backing from the strip on the flap of the pouch. Fold over the flap to seal the pouch. Place the pouch, paper side up, into the autoclave tray.
- 4). Place an indicator strip with the load of needles into the autoclave. Fill the autoclave and close the door. Set the timer for the cycle. Vent the cycle by turning the knob to the vent option once the timer signals the end of the cycle. The autoclave's pressure and heat gauges return to zero as the autoclave cools down. Remove the needles with clean gloves when both gauges reach zero and the sterile pouches are dry.
