When Should I Plant a Spruce Tree?

    Spruce Tree Planting

    • Spruce trees require the same kind of care given to other types of evergreen trees. To plant, dig a trench into the ground at least a foot deep. Set the tree into the ground, pushing the roots into the bottom of the trench, then lift the tree slightly to ground level. This prevents the roots from curling upward. Pour 1 qt. water into the trench and allow to drain down, then fill the trench with dirt. Form a circular berm round the base of the tree and fill it with ½-inch mulch to assist in retaining water and controlling weeds. Apply a balanced fertilizer like 12-12-12 yearly. Do not overfertilize.

    Fall Planting

    • Fall is the best time to plant spruce trees. Evergreens begin to go into a dormancy period in the fall which reduces the stress of transplanting. Fall planting also allows the tree to become acclimated to its new environment before beginning a growth cycle. To prevent desiccation, that is, freeze-drying, of young spruce tree transplants, keep the ground moist until the winter frost arrives. Spread a fresh layer of mulch at the base of the tree to insulate roots against the cold. Heavy snowfall will help to insulate newly planted roots

    Spring Planting

    • The spring, just after the frost has left, is another good time to plant evergreens like spruce trees. The ground is still cool, and spring rains will help to keep the soil moist for good root establishment. The spruce tree will be acclimated before the hot summer weather arrives. Provide adequate irrigation for the newly planted spruce tree during the summer months. A drip-irrigation system is recommended to keep the roots of newly-planted trees evenly moist.

    Summer Planting

    • Summer planting of spruce trees is not recommended because transplant shock can occur from the ground temperature differential, and the inability of newly-established roots to draw sufficient water from the heated soil. Wait until late in the summer, such as in August, to transplant evergreens.
