Painting Melamine Cabinets
- 1). Sand the melamine cabinet firmly with 80-grit sandpaper to roughen the smooth texture of the cabinet. Use a small orbital sander to speed up the task.
- 2). Mix together equal amounts of water and white vinegar and use this mixture to wash the cabinet. Remove all traces of dirt or grease to ensure that the paint adheres properly.
- 3). Dry the melamine cabinet thoroughly with a clean towel.
- 4). Wipe the entire cabinet with a tack cloth, a slightly sticky cloth that removes dust and dirt from a surface prior to painting. Find these cloths at home improvement or paint stores.
- 5). Apply one coat of oil-based enamel paint in your desired color to the melamine cabinet. Allow the paint to dry completely before continuing to the next step.
- 6). Wipe the dry painted cabinet with a tack cloth to remove any dust that may have settled on the cabinet after painting.
- 7). Apply a second coat of the same paint to the melamine cabinet and wait for it to dry.
- 8). Lightly sand the dry painted cabinet with 220-grit sandpaper to remove any small imperfections and make the surface shine.
- 9). Wipe the cabinet with a tack cloth to remove any dust created during sanding.

Apply one coat of clear polyurethane spray to the painted cabinet. This will help protect the paint from chipping or flaking.
