How to Troubleshoot 2 Cycle Weed Trimmers

    • 1). Mix a gallon of gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil to the required mix ratio (40:1, 50:1 or otherwise as specified and required by the engine manufacturer). Drain the fuel from the tank and replace the fuel with properly mixed fuel. Push the primer bulb three to six times, open the choke and attempt to start the engine. If the engine is already warm, open the choke halfway.

    • 2). Disconnect the spark plug wire and remove the spark plug from the engine. Clean the spark plug with a cloth rag. Check the spark plug for damage or for signs of wear and tear. If the spark plug is worn, replace it with a new plug. If it is worn or damaged, the starting problems will persist until the plug is replaced. After replacing the spark plug, reattach the wire and attempt to start the weed trimmer.

    • 3). Check the muffler screen and the spark arresting screen. Clean the screens if they are dirty and replace them. Dirty and clogged screens will prevent the engine from "breathing" correctly. Check the screens whenever you check the spark plug.

    • 4). Clean the air filter regularly. Dirty air filters do not allow the engine to perform correctly. You can wash the filter with soap and water. Allow it to air dry. Add a few drops of oil to the filter, or spray the filter with spray lubricant. The lubricant will attract more dirt and keep it out of the piston chamber.
