    History

    • Polywood was first established in 1973. The company first manufactured semi finished components for furniture. In 1980, the company started manufacturing finished products on behalf of other companies both in the United States and internationally. In 1994, new owners bought the company and re-launched the brand name, this time specializing in low-cost kit furniture.

    Features

    • Polywood can be easily fashioned into furniture using commercial grade stainless steel fastening components and has an extra-protective and cosmetic coating. It can be cut and drilled into different shapes for decking and furniture that will last a lifetime. A range of colors and styles are available and a variety of wood designs give the lumber an authentic wood-like finish. The non-porous surface prevents fading and other damage caused by natural elements. The lumber comes with a five-year warranty for residential use and a one-year warranty for structural use.

    Function

    • Polywood is being used for a range of functions. In residences, Polywood is commonly used for outdoor furniture, gazebos, sandboxes and camping furniture. Traditional Adirondack chairs, rockers, gliders, dining tables and chairs, bistro tables and swings are also made from Polywood. For structural applications, Polywood is used for railroad cross ties, joists, beams, posts, vehicular and pedestrian bridges, boardwalks, walkways, roll-up walkways, piers and observation platforms.

    Significance

    • Polywood is low maintenance and very durable. It is made of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The plastic items that make up polywood usually end up as toxic waste in landfills. Instead, they are put to a sustainable use.

    Benefits

    • Polywood is stronger and lasts longer than real wood (both treated and untreated). Polywood doesn't warp or splinter like real wood does. Corrosion and problems with mildew, rodents, insects, worms and marine parasites that are common enemies of wood do not affect polywood. The material is also durable and resistant to extreme heat, cold and acids.
