- Westport, Connecticut was first settled in 1639 and later incorporated in 1835. For many years, Westport was a thriving agricultural area and was know to be the leader in onion production. A Minuteman statue marks the site of the Battle of Ridgefield fought on Compo Beach. In this battle, the Westport Minutemen defeated the invading British by attacking them from behind as they came ashore. Today, Westport is one of the most affluent areas in the United States. Westport was once home to actor Paul Newman and the set for the movie "The Stepford Wives."
