Plant Propagation of Gardenias

    • 1). Water the gardenia the night before you propagate the plant. This ensures that the moisture remains in the cutting when you remove it.

    • 2). Remove a 6-inch stem from a healthy gardenia. The stem should have three or more pairs of leaves.

    • 3). Dampen three paper towels and place them inside a plastic bag. Place the cutting inside the bag and place the bag in the shade until you are ready to plant the cutting.

    • 4). Fill a plastic seed tray with an equal mixture of peat moss and sand. Dampen the mixture with water to moisten it, but avoid soaking it.

    • 5). Remove the lower leaves from the begonia stem. Leave one pair of leaves on the upper section of the cutting. Dip the cut end of the stem into a root hormone powder.

    • 6). Plant the cutting into the sand mixture. The leaves need to remain above the mixture.

    • 7). Spray the potting mixture with water to keep it moist. Cover the tray with the provided plastic lid. Place the seed tray in indirect sunlight. Maintain a temperature around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 8). Examine the tray every day. If the potting mixture feels dry to the touch, mist it lightly with water. Care for the gardenia cutting for four to six weeks until it roots.

    • 9). Transplant the rooted cutting into a 4-inch planting pot. Place the gardenia in bright sunlight and continue to moisten the soil. Keep the temperature range above 65 degrees Fahrenheit and transplant the gardenia outdoors in the spring once the frost passes.
