Treating Hemorrhoids Safely and Effectively

A lot of methods exist when it comes to treating hemorrhoids safely and effectively.
This sometimes-debilitating condition is a result of swelling of the veins in the anal canal.
When these veins are swollen on the inside of the canal, you end up with internal hemorrhoids.
If they're on the outside, around the lip of the anus (which is more common), you have external hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids result in many instances from repeated and excessively long periods of sitting, generally.
You may also see them develop in obese or overweight populations.
They're known as an occupational hazard with over-the-road truck drivers, in many instances.
Their treatment isn't too complicated or involved, once they're diagnosed correctly.
Symptoms can include pain in the affected area, and sometimes intense itching or burning.
Bleeding is reported less often, but can still be a factor in a number of cases.
This is especially true if the swelling of the involved veins is severe or prolonged.
There are plenty of over-the-counter creams and suppositories which can relieve most of these symptoms in a fairly short amount of time.
A classic, and natural, treatment involves the use of what's called a "sitz bath.
" In this therapy, you fill a tub with warm water up to a level that's sufficient to cover the affected region, in the case of external hemorrhoids.
Soaking for a period of from 10 to 20 minutes, several times a day, is recommended.
You can also follow this with periods of massage of the area with ice cubes or an ice pack to help alleviate swelling.
After the ice is used, apply a warm compress for another 10 to 20 minutes three to four times a day.
Suffering from hemorrhoids doesn't have to be debilitating.
If they're treated quickly enough, chances are you can reduce swelling, pain and any itching in fairly rapid order.
As always, surgical treatment should be a last resort.
Consult with your physician if these simple measures don't help to clear the problem up after a week or so.
