    • 1). Review the engine-starting procedure: Push the primer bulb two or three times if starting from cold, set the throttle control to "Fast" and pull the starter cord. Cold engines are harder to start unless you press the primer. The throttle control helps control the engine speed during operation. Wait a few minutes between starting attempts.

    • 2). Check that there is enough fuel remaining in the tank; you might have used up all of your gas during previous use. Replace the gas if it is more than a few months old; water and dirt can enter the system and make the engine hard to start and run. Ensure you purchase the correct type of gas.

    • 3). Confirm that the spark-plug wire is attached to the spark plug; you might have disconnected the wire before starting maintenance on your mower as instructed in your owner's manual. Disconnecting the spark plug prevents accidental engine starts. Reconnect the wire over the spark plug and try again. Swap the spark plug for a suitable replacement if necessary.

    • 4). Clean the debris screen, located on top of the engine, and the air filter if you notice leaves, grass or other plant debris creating a blockage. The engine will be hard to start and run while the screens and filters are blocked. Replace the filter or screen if damaged.

    • 5). Have your carburettor examined by a professional technician; it may require cleaning or adjusting. A dirty or poorly adjusted carburettor makes the engine hard to start and difficult to idle.
