Teach Kids Math Through Cooking

Make learning math fun. Teach kids math through cooking to teach them three math fundamentals while spending quality time together.

Measurements
Even picky eaters love to cook. And the more they cook, the more likely they are to eat the foods they prepare.

Choose kid-friendly recipes to prepare with your children. Follow the recipe and show your kids how to properly measure out the ingredients.

Through cooking, kids can learn about fractions.

If a recipe calls for a cup, take the time to explain that three 1/3 cup measurements are the same as 1 cup and two 1/2 cup measurements are also the same as 1 cup.

Time
How long does the recipe take to prepare and how long does it take to cook? Teach your kids the importance of time through cooking.

Set a timer and track the time it takes to cook the food. If you're cooking in the oven, turn the oven light on and together you can watch the food cooking through the window. Of course, make sure the surface of the oven is not hot so you and your children won't get hurt.

At different stages of time, point out how the food looks. That way, kids can see why it's important to follow the recipe and pay attention to the time it takes for the food to cook.

Temperature
Temperature is another valuable math lesson you can find in cooking. Tell your children why they should always follow the recipe's instructions for temperature -- food won't cook, properly set and could even be dangerous.

For extra math practice and to stress the importance of following the instructions, alter the recipe.

Show your kids what happens when you don't follow the recipe's instructions.

For example, what will the recipe taste like when you use 3 cups of milk instead of one tablespoon? What does the food look like when you set a lower temperature instead of the temperature the recipe calls for?

Teaching math to kids through cooking gives them hands-on experience with measurements, time and temperature. The extra advantage is that you get to spend fun time with your children in the kitchen, making math a fun learning activity.
