- 1). Locate a nearby local drop-box for the Cell Phones For Soldiers charity. This organization, which was founded by two Massachusetts teenagers in 2004, is designed to provide soldiers in combat with a free way of contacting their loved ones at home. The charity collects used, yet functional cell phones from all over the United States. These phones are then sent overseas with prepaid calling cards. There are numerous drop-off points located in Richmond, including all Liberty Taxi Service centers and AT&T Wireless stores. - 2). Donate your old cell phones to any Verizon Wireless store for Hopeline, a charity that is run by Verizon Wireless. This organization, which has been in operation since 1995, collects all phones and either reconditions them or recycles them for parts. The profits made off of the donated items are then given to groups that combat domestic violence in America. In addition, the company also collects old batteries and properly disposes of them. Currently, there are four Verizon Wireless locations in the city of Richmond.
- 3). Give your phone to the 911 Cell Phone Bank. This nonprofit organization, which was created in 2004, takes used cell phones and converts them into phones that solely dial (911). These phones are then distributed to those in need, such as senior citizens that live alone.To date, the 911 Cell Phone Bank has given out more than 85,000 phones to those in need.You may drop off any used phone at the University of Richmond and it will be delivered to the charity.
