How to Format an Email Address
- 1). Choose characters that are RFC compliant, which means they are recognized by Internet servers. Use upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, periods, dashes and underscores in any combination. You can also use the "+" sign.
- 2). Limit the number of characters in the local part of the email address--the part before the "@" sign--to no more than 64 characters. Choose something that is relevant to the purpose of your email communications for this portion, such as your name, your company's name or a screen name.
- 3). Type the "@" sign after the local part of the email address.
- 4). Type the name of the domain your email account is hosted on after the "@" sign. Yahoo.com, gmail.com and hotmail.com are three common domains that many people use. Your domain may also be the name of your Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as att.com, suddenlink.com or swbell.com.
