Copyright Greed an Issue With Online Articles
Indeed, they often quote large sections, which tends to infuriate the copyright holders, their publishers, and the writers.
Who can blame them, however there is another side to the coin, and that is if you are constantly being quoted, your fame grows, and so too will your book sales, and if you are writing a column or news articles, you can bet that your notoriety will also increase significantly.
Now then, recently, I read a great editorial by Tony Woodlief entitled; "Curse of the Greedy Copyright Holder," published on July 09, 2010.
I ask that you go look up this article right now and read it, and then come back to this discussion and my comments as they pertain to a slightly different topic; the online article venue! Okay, glad you are back.
Now then, as you recall there was a very good quote in that article; "If I could quote your work, more people might read it.
" Which is exactly my point, however what gets people really perturbed is when you quote their work in excess of 100s of words, and you are basically stealing their content, and indeed if you are doing this online, you are able to use their content to bolster your own website's search engine rankings with those keywords.
Worse, if you steal large sections of content from many people, you don't have to produce any work, just collect the benefits of ripping off theirs.
You see, it is my contention that far too many people are lifting content for this very purpose, and as an online article author I have watched folks steal my content by the boatloads, and yes, I have boatloads of created content; some 20,700 articles in fact.
Is it really greedy of me to wish these people to stop? Certainly not, and as far as readership goes, believe me, I have plenty of article views, readers, and decent search engine rankings for my topics of choice.
Please consider all this.
