How to Stain a Porch
- 1). Sweep your entire porch thoroughly, making sure to remove all visible debris.
- 2). Apply a generous amount of commercial deck cleaner to the wood. Allow it to soak for 15 to 30 minutes. Afterwards, work the cleaner into the wood by scrubbing it with a bristle brush.
- 3). Rinse away all traces of the commercial deck cleaner with a garden hose. Allow it to completely dry.
- 4). Sand down any areas that have obvious remnants of past stains. All chipping, peeling and cracked stain should be removed before you add your new stain.
- 5). Put on your rubber gloves and goggles. Open your can of stain and pour it into a roller pan. Dip your roller into the roller pan and apply the stain to your porch, along the pattern of the grain.
- 6). Use a standard paint brush to apply the stain to to any areas that you were unable to get with the roller. You can also apply more stain on areas that look thin or too light.
- 7). Wait for four hours before applying a second coat of stain. Wait one to two full days before exposing your porch to everyday use.
