Cake decorating is a fun, useful pastime that can save you a lot of money.
And if you practice enough, you may even get hired to make someone else a cake and earn some money.
Practicing is very important.
Your friends and family will happily eat all of your "practice" cakes.
But no matter how many times you practice, if you don't have the right equipment, you will have to work three times as hard.
And in the end, you still won't be satisfied with the result.
So the right equipment is essential.
Good pans are essential.
There are many, many specialty pans in every shape and size you can imagine.
But before you delve into those, consider a good set of nine inch round pans.
Most cakes call for three layers.
So buy three good quality pans at the same time.
Different pans will vary the cooking times.
So buying them together is a good idea.
If cupcakes is your passion, buy a good quality cupcake tin, both the regular size and the mini cupcake size.
In addition to the traditional metal pan, there are now silicone cake pans and cupcake tins.
Check these out to see if you want to invest in them.
Once you've baked and cooled your cake, it's time to work with the frosting.
Frosting a cake is possible without a lazy susan type decorating turntable.
But it really makes frosting a cake easier.
A decorating turntable makes it easier to create a professional looking cake.
Basically, these come in two sizes: the flat version and the elevated version.
Both work well but the elevated version allows the baker to more easily see the cake at eye level.
This is what professionals use.
You'll also need some off-set spatulas.
These are great for spreading frosting and helping a cake on and off a surface.
Other things necessary to complete your cake care frosting tips and decorating bags, where you put the frosting.
Sometimes it's overlooked just how important the recipes for the cake and frosting are.
They should be considered just as important as good quality tools.
Good frosting makes a good cake; bad frosting ruins it.
The same goes with cake.
We assume the recipe is going to taste good.
But you should test it first.
Then see how crumbly it is.
A crumbling cake is not what you want to be working with.
Other things that really help cake decorating run smoothly is an assortment of off-set spatulas.
These are what the frosting is spread with.
