How to Plant Alstroemeria
- 1). Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil. Amend the garden soil with peat moss or compost in late spring after the last frost.
- 2). Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Set the plant in the hole with the top of the root ball level with the ground surface; fill in with dirt and firm over. If planting more than one, space the plants 1 foot apart.
- 3). Water generously after planting. Keep watered daily and water lightly during winter. Do not let dry out.
- 4). Fertilize once a month during the plant's growing period. An all-purpose plant fertilizer works best.
- 5). Cut flowers periodically to help new growth form. Cut flowers work great in bouquets.
- 6). Apply a thick layer of mulch after the growing period, usually in early fall. Plants can be cut back to about 4 to 6 inches from the ground. Spread a 4- to 6-inch layer of dry straw, pine needles or bark over the plants to keep the soil warm during the winter months.
