Anytime you move to a new neighborhood it takes some time to get to know the area, to learn the main avenues and the places to avoid as well as the safest routes to take when you are walking home at night. Whether you live in an affluent neighborhood, or a not so nice one, living in a big city always runs you the risk of running into petty theft or crime and it is important that you do all that you can to make sure that you and your housemates remain safe and secure at all times. By taking a few added home security precautions you will be bale to take advantage of all that your new neighborhood has to offer and can safely explore your surroundings without worrying about getting in harms way.

For starters, make sure that your building or home has sturdy locks in both the entrance and the private parts of your home like your room. If you are living with strangers it is important that you have a lock on the door to your room as you want to protect your privacy and feel safe leaving your valuables and electronics strewn about your room. For home security reasons it is important that you speak to your new roommates about being selective with who they allow in the house and that they respect the common living spaces and your room. As long as you all have respect for each other and prioritize your safety, you should not have any issues.

Also, be sure to install a home alarm system if you dont already have one as it will make your life infinitely easier as you can be more relaxed knowing that you have a system of protection in place that will alert you of any unwarranted activity in your home. Always be sure that you and your roommates activate the alarm when you leave and try not to give the code out to anyone else but the members of your household. Likewise, make sure that you and your roommates are the only ones with copies of your housekey as you do not want to compromise your safety by having several copies of the key floating about.

Lastly, it is imperative that you install bars on your windows if you live on the first floor as you do not want strangers to gain access to your home or easily be able to sneak in through the windows. For home security reasons, be sure to lock your windows at night as it is always better to err on the side of caution rather than risk your safety or that of your housemates. Make sure that when you throw a party, you and your housemates only invite people that you know as it is never a good idea to invite strangers into your home. By following these simple tips you should be able to enjoy your new neighborhood in a safe and secure manner.
