The group had no experience in bleach-making chemistry but suspected that the brine found in salt ponds in San Francisco could be converted into bleach.
The Limited - In 1963, 26 year old Leslie Wexner left his family's retail store after having an argument with his father.
He opened one small store in a strip mall in Columbus, Ohio.
Today the company operates more than 5000 stores in the United States.
Coca-Cola - Pharmacist John Pemberton invented a soft drink in his backyard in 1886.
Asa Chandler bought the company for $2,300 in 1891.
Today it is worth over $170 billion.
Marriott - Willard Marriott and his fiancee/partner started a 9-seat A&W soda fountain with $3,000 in 1927.
They demonstrated a knack for hospitality and clever marketing from the beginning.
Nike - Very interesting, in the early 1960's, Philip Knight and his college track coach sold imported Japanese sneakers from the trunk of a station wagon.
Start-up costs totaled $1,000.
FedEx - In 1971 Fred Smith started a bicycle messenger service pedaling packages around Memphis.
In 1973, a customer requested next-day delivery to Knoxville, Tennessee; Smith agree, unsure of how he'd do it...
Of course, starting a new business doesn't guarantee that you'll be successful.
