How to Winterize With Burlap
- 1). Cut off any dead, damaged or diseased foliage in the fall from the plants you want to winterize with burlap. This will make them easier to cover up.
- 2). Water the ground around the plants you want to winterize well before the ground freezes. Place a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the plants after you water them well.
- 3). Cut out a piece of burlap long enough to wrap around the plant two or three times.
- 4). Wrap the burlap fabric around the plant two or three times, making sure to cover the whole plant. Make sure the burlap is loose enough that the branches won't break. Wrap the lower part of the plant in the burlap, and lay the rest of the burlap on the ground. Lay some rocks over the bottom of the burlap to hold it on the ground in case of wind.
