    Work Areas

    • According to home remodeling expert Bob Vila, the best way to organize a garage shop is in work sections. When you plan your layout, you should have an area for tool storage, a section where you do your painting and staining work, an area for sanding and sandblasting, an assembly area and a place to do finishing work such as detailed painting or adding decorative pieces. Using sections allows you to better plan where your larger tools and equipment will be placed, and it also helps you to create a workshop in which you can have several projects going on at the same time. Breaking up your garage shop into sections helps you to keep your shop better organized, and it also helps create areas that are better suited for the tasks you will be doing. For example, by creating a separate section for sanding and sandblasting, you will be able to put in the proper ventilation and sawdust removal equipment that will make it safe and keep your shop clean.

    Starting Small

    • Allowing your garage workshop to grow as your needs grow can be easier than trying to lay out a huge workshop that may be more than you need, according to online woodwork resource Fine Woodworking. You can begin your workshop in the corner of your garage, and slowly expand outward as your shop needs change. Starting out small also allows you to create a workshop without having to invest money into materials and equipment for which you may not have a use.

    Mobile Tables

    • One of the ways you can utilize the space in a smaller garage workshop is to put all of your work tables, benches and storage cabinets on wheels. When you have mobile tables, you only need to create one central work area. You can move equipment and tables in and out as you need them. To save even more space, you can use your work tables as storage cabinets as well, putting your tools within arm's reach while you are working on projects.

    Flooring Material

    • The online shop resource Fine Woodworking points out that a concrete floor can be painful to stand on for hours at a time. One of the ways to reduce the effects of an unforgiving concrete floor is to install carpet padding and then put an inexpensive indoor/outdoor carpet on top of it. Secure the carpet to the garage or basement floor with strong two-sided tape.
