The Best Knots for Hanging a Rope Hammock

    Standard Hammock Knot

    • Used in hammocks that tie directly to trees as well as hammocks that tie to carbine clips and other quick release devices, the standard hammock knot minimizes friction while maintaining a tight grip on the securing post. Tie the standard hammock knot by doubling the rope over and wrapping it around the post. Next, make a loop at the joined end of the rope and push the loose ends through, creating a noose that holds the post securely. Finally, repeat this process with the hammock attachment loop and tighten firmly. The end result should leave the two loose ends still loose just past the noose by the hammock attachment loop. Release the knot by pulling on the loose ends.

    Hennessy Hammock Knot

    • While the standard hammock knot relies on competing nooses that pull against each other, the Hennessy Hammock Knot uses the strength of compound hitches to ensure the hammock hangs safely. Start the Hennessy knot by wrapping the rope around the post or running it through a tree strap and pulling tight. Next, wrap the loose end of the rope around the tightened end once, then behind the knot once. Pull tightly and then repeat the process three more times. With the last of the rope, hitch the loose ends to the tightened part of the rope with a loose square knot.

    Four-Wrap Hammock Knot

    • The four-wrap knot is especially useful for hammocks tied to trees because it ensures any friction is felt by the rope and not the securing post. Start this knot by wrapping the rope around the tree and folding the loose end over the tightened end. Next, wrap the loose end of the rope around the tree and fold it over the tightened end of the rope, this time folding the opposite way. Run the free end through the hole created when you folded it over the second time and then loop the loose end and bring it up through the fold created by the last overlap of loose rope with tight rope. The result looks similar to a neck tie, with a large loop at the top and the loose end dangling beneath the knot.

    A Good Knot

    • Many knots are used when hanging a hammock and each one has advantages and disadvantages. The best knots put the least amount of stress on the securing post, do not tighten so much that the user cannot untie them and will not slip because of rain or impact.
