    • 1). Choose suitable planting containers for your aquatic plants that are large enough to comfortably house their root systems. Keep in mind that most types of aquatic plants will grow to the size of their container. Select planting containers for your aquatic plants that are made of fabric or plastic for best results.

    • 2). Plant your aquatic plants in their planting containers, using a heavy clay loam soil mix as the growing medium. Consult the specific cultivation requirements for your aquatic plant cultivars for instructions on how deep they should be planted in their planting containers.

    • 3). Cover the surface of the growing medium in each of your planting containers with a 1-inch layer of pea gravel to keep the growing medium in the planting container. The layer of pea gravel also helps prevent fish from digging through your planting containers.

    • 4). Position your aquatic plants in your pond or water garden at the depth specified for their plant type. Situate the plants in your pond so that the tops of the planting containers are a minimum of 8 inches underwater.

    • 5). Fertilize your aquatic plants once a month during their growing season with a 12-8-8, 5-10-5, 10-6-4 or 20-10-5 aquatic plant fertilizer. Consider using aquatic plant fertilizer tablets for clean and hassle-free fertilization. Use the aquatic plant fertilizer according to package directions to avoid overfertilization.

    • 6). Remove the potted aquatic plants from your pond or water garden in the winter and store them in a shed or garage that is kept below 50 degrees F. Water your aquatic plants periodically throughout the winter months to prevent their growing medium from completely drying out. Return your aquatic plants to their positions in your pond or water garden in the spring.
