It's really hard to identify the exact cause of tinnitus for each individual person.
Measuring tinnitus is very tough for people to do because only the person with tinnitus can hear it.

There are many tests that can be performed but the best advice I can give you is find out what your root cause of it is and then it will be easier to cure or at least help.
What you will want to first find out with tinnitus is, is it subjective tinnitus or objective tinnitus.
Subjective tinnitus is a lot more commonly found in people.
Whereas objective tinnitus only affects a small percentage of tinnitus sufferers.
If you have a ringing, buzzing, or another strange noise coming from your inner ear and your doctor cannot hear with a professional instrument then you have subjective tinnitus.
If the doctor can in-fact hear the noise coming through then you do have objective tinnitus.
Subjective tinnitus is more common and is usually the less severe of the two.
The most common cause of the subjective tinnitus is hearing loss due to aging.
If the inner ear has had intense exposure to loud sounds, tinnitus can form at a younger age.
The average age where tinnitus usually is noticed first is in the persons 50's or 60's.
Tinnitus sets in at different ages depending a lot on the trauma added to the inner ear.
Tinnitus sometimes sets in a lot earlier than expected.
If tinnitus does set in at a younger age there is a possibility that it could be a more serious disease.
Loud noises are a very common cause of why tinnitus sets in.
This is why it is recommended to wear earplugs while working around loud noises.
