    • 1). Spray an herbicide over the lawn. Follow the directions on the herbicide as to how much you need for the size of your lawn. Since you have issues with crab grass and other weeds, you need a broad herbicide that will cover a lot of weeds. Read the label to ensure that the herbicide you choose does not harm your type of grass. Fill a garden sprayer and spray the chemical over the lawn.

    • 2). Wait for four to six weeks for the weeds to die. After two weeks if you see not weeds dying, apply the herbicide again. Do not apply weed killers right before rain is forecast.

    • 3). Rake the lawn to remove the dead weeds and roots from the area. Dispose of the dead debris in a garbage bag.

    • 4). Fill a garden spreader with half of the recommended amount of seeds for your lawn size. The pack will give you the amounts needed for overseeding.

    • 5). Walk over the lawn in rows pushing the garden spreader to cast the seeds.

    • 6). Fill the spreader with the other half of the amount of seeds needed. Push the spreader in rows going in the opposite direction as the first rows.

    • 7). Sprinkle straw over the seeded area, letting the straw fall through your fingers. Don't cover the lawn entirely or you will block out all light needed to germinate the seed.

    • 8). Water the yard to a depth of 2 inches using a sprinkle. Water each day early in the morning until you see grass coming up through the soil. Once growth starts slow your watering to twice a week equal to 1 inch of water a week.
