Things to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

    Eliminate Stagnant Water

    • Mosquitoes need stagnant water to be able to breed. The gestation period is approximately 18 to 35 days, so having a breeding pool around will create a constant stream of young, hungry mosquitoes. Going right to the source is an effective way to eliminate further mosquito infestation. Inform your neighbors as well, so that their mosquitoes don't pay a hungry visit to your house.

    Regular Landscaping

    • Mosquitoes prefer dark, shady areas with a lot of vegetation and moisture. Trimming trees, bushes and grass exposes these areas and allows sunlight and wind to create an inhospitable place for mosquitoes.

    Barriers

    • Having mosquitoes in the yard may be discouraging, but when mosquitoes have infiltrated a house it can mean many irritating, sleepless nights. Make sure all windows are equipped with screens and that gaps are sealed. If mosquitoes still enter the house, a mosquito net will provide a barrier over the bed to allow for restful sleep. Another option is buying a fan and keeping a constant breeze over your body during the night. This makes the mosquito unable to fly over and land on your body.

    Repellent

    • Using repellent to go out in your yard every evening is tedious, but it is a good option if you are going out of your yard or to an event for the evening. These lotions and sprays are proven to repel mosquitoes and keep your worries at bay when enjoying a night out.

    Plants

    • Certain plants have been proven to repel mosquitoes and bring a nice aroma to your yard. Common choices are citronella, rosemary, catnip and lavender. This is a natural approach to take and also provides herbs for tea and seasonings.

    Bug Lights

    • Some lights attract mosquitoes because of the frequency they emit. Bug lights or LED lights work at a different frequency to avoid this. Changing your lights outside and near entrances decreases the attraction of mosquitoes.
