How to Stop Crab Grass

    • 1). Pull up existing crab grass. Grab the grass at its base, as close to the dirt as possible, and pull. By grabbing close to the base, you should be able to remove the root along with the stalk. If your ground is very tough and dry, and the roots will not pull up easily, use a trowel to dig the roots out. If you do not remove the roots, the crab grass will re-grow.

Pulling up the grass is a tedious, time-consuming process, but it is the healthiest way to remove crab grass from your lawn.

    • 2). Herbicides Online explains that crab grass is a "grassy weed" and not a "broad leaf weed." This means that it has the same root structure as normal grass, so herbicides used to kill crab grass can sometimes inadvertently harm your existing grass. Spray herbicides or consider removing large sections of infected turf if you have a major crab grass infestation that cannot be removed by pulling the weeds out.

    • 3). Sprinkle a layer of corn gluten meal on your lawn. Corn gluten meal is a pre-emergent, organic herbicide. In other words, it is a safe, natural way to kill existing crab grass seeds before they germinate. Natural Green Lawn recommends using 10 pounds of corn gluten meal for every 1,000 square feed of grass. It's best to apply corn gluten meal in early spring, since that is when crab grass beings to germinate. For a lawn with frequent crab grass, however, apply as soon as possible and then reapply in the spring. Corn gluten meal will help stop most crab grass at its source, but the key to continued crab grass prevention lies in a healthy, thick lawn.

    • 4). Fertilize your lawn with a natural fertilizer and make sure to keep it well watered. A lush lawn is crucial for preventing weeds. Crab grass is only able to take root and grow if your lawn is not densely populated with healthy grasses. Weeds cannot pop up if all available soil and nutrients are already being used by your lawn.
