Remedies for Heartburn
- Antacids, such as Tums, Rolaids, Maalox or Mylanta, can be used as a remedy. Antacids can neutralize stomach acids and give temporary relief, but they should not be overused.
- H-2-receptor blockers, such as nizatidine or famotidine, can be used as a remedy. They provide longer relief than antacids yet do not act as quickly. They should not be taken with certain medication and can cause side effects, such as headaches or kidney problems.
- Proton pump inhibitors, such as Prilosec, can be taken as a remedy. This can block the production of acid, providing healing time for the esophageal tissue.
- Making lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating smaller meals, wearing loose clothing and quitting smoking can prevent heartburn.
- Changing your diet and avoiding foods that can trigger heartburn can be a remedy. The food triggers may be different for each person, but common ones are foods that are high in fat, fried foods, chocolate, garlic, tomatoes, caffeine, alcohol and onions.
- Avoiding certain movements or body positions can help reduce heartburn. A person should wait several hours to lie down after eating, avoid bending over and keep the head elevated in bed.
