How to Use Outdoor Rugs Inside
- 1). Measure your room, or the area where you'll be using the rug. Write down your measurements for easy reference while you're shopping for your rug. If you'll be using your rug for an entire room, leave at least one foot of exposed flooring around the perimeter of the room. If you'll be using your rug under a dining table, make sure the size you buy will accommodate the entire table as well as all chairs when they are pulled out for people to sit down or stand up. For your living room, the rug should be large enough so that your entire coffee table and the front legs of your sofa are resting on the rug.
- 2). Shop for your rug based on your room's measurements and color scheme. Whether you're shopping in a bricks-and-mortar store or online, you'll find lots of color and pattern options, including animal prints, florals, geometrics and bordered designs. Whether your room's style is modern, traditional, country, eclectic or somewhere in between, chances are there is an outdoor rug that will fit it well. There are some beautiful, traditionally-styled outdoor rugs available, however, keep in mind that outdoor rugs are generally more suited to casual rooms than formal ones.
- 3). Purchase your rug pad. Rug pads made specifically for outdoor rugs are made to withstand rain, sun and extreme temperatures. However, since you are using your rug inside, you may want to purchase a standard interior rug pad. Generally, the thicker the rug is, the thicker the rug pad should be. Outdoor rugs are usually not as thick as shag or plush interior rugs, so you may want to purchase a pad on the thinner end of the spectrum. Rug pads help your rug last longer, provide traction so that your rug doesn't slide around on your floor, and give your outdoor rug more of a cushioned, luxurious feel.
- 4). Position your rug pad in place on the floor and roll your rug out on top of the pad. No part of the rug pad should be showing. If your rug pad is too large, you can easily trim off the excess with sharp scissors, being extremely careful not to scratch or cut your floor.
- 5). Move your furniture back in place.
