BCAA for Muscle Building Recovery and Results

Amino Acids are the building blocks for protein. The Branched Chain Amino Acids include isoleucine, leucine and valine. They are unique in that that they are metabolized outside of the liver (extrahepatic), in the skeletal muscle. And, even though BCAA's only account for 20% of the total amino acids in a protein, they can account for up to 90% of the total amino acids that your muscles take up. BCAA's are found in a third of your muscle.

The benefit for those working out and maintaining overall health can be seen in several studies conducted on athletes before, during and after their workout. For those that ingested a drink that combined carbohydrates, BCAA and in one study, arginine, the levels of glucose and insulin were significantly higher than the placebo group. Further tests showed improvements in the BCAA group during the recovery period. In that phase of the workout, the testosterone-cortisol ration two hours after the workout was higher than in the placebo group. Subject of the tests who drank the BCAA mix reported feeling less fatigued during the training session which, in theory, can lead to a better overall workout.

Similar findings were found in studies using BCAA supplement and a placebo group. The BCAA group starting taking supplements 3 weeks before the test which included 1 week of high-intensity, total-body resistance training (overreaching). The training included 3 sets of 6-8 repetitions at maximum levels and a total of 8 exercises. The result was that the blood samples of the BCAA group showed higher serum testosterone levels, and lower cortisol and creatine kinase levels. This means that the supplementation was favorable for anabolic hormonal profile, creating better performance and muscle tissue damage was lessened.

What happens when you have too little BCAA's in your system? You could experience poor recovery after training and find yourself hitting a wall in your workouts where you don't see any real progression in training or desired muscle building. However, with supplementation muscle protein synthesis is stimulated and you could experience and increase in testosterone, growth hormone and insulin.

Military Grade Nutritionals recently released a BCAA supplement formula. Combined with L-Glutamine and Vitamins B for optimal protein synthesis, this dietary supplement fortifies your musculoskeletal system when you need it the most.
