Plants & Shrubs to Put at an Entryway
- Camellias are erect evergreen shrubs that require little maintenance. They prefer moist soil and reward you with rose-like flowers several times a year. Camellias should be pruned back each spring and will respond with strong new growth. Boxwood is another evergreen, and a traditional favorite due to its tolerance of being pruned into interesting shapes.
- Abutilon, or flowering maple, is an attractive entryway plant. Its flower is a hanging bell-shaped bloom giving it the nickname "Chinese lantern." Most are evergreen and do well in a sheltered location during winter. Canna lilies, with their striped foliage, garner attention at entryways. Cannas have the added bonus of needing to be divided each year, supplying you with extra lilies to plant elsewhere.
- Bay laurel is a foliage plant that adds an aromatic flair to doors and entryways. A low-maintenance choice, bay laurel needs only occasional watering and trimming. A beautiful specimen when planted alone, it can also anchor a planting of various herbs, such as thyme, sage and marjoram.
