If you have gone from thick to thin hair and are at a loss for words about why this is happening you have come to the right place. And after all, who wouldn't be looking for answers after such a dramatic change in appearance. In this article we will explore the phenomenon of thick to thin hair by first investigating what the American Medical Association has to say about hair, and then explore a few ways to at least partially restore your rapidly disappearing locks.

An individual hair on the head grows from 2 to 5 years and then retreats into a resting stage during which the bulb shrinks back from the root and hair begins to travel toward the skin surface. When hair falls out, a new hair grows behind it. Scalp hair grows at a rate of about one half inch per month.

Hair texture is determined by the shape of the follicle from which the hair grows. Hair color is caused by the amount and type of melanin, the same pigment that darkens the skin, present in the hair shaft. Pretty interesting stuff, right?

Now let's get back to our main topic of how thick to thin hair can occur. The simple answer is that the hair replacement cycle no longer is as efficient as it once was. A more complicated question to answer is why this is the case.

In most cases of thick to thin hair the once healthy and open hair follicle complex begins to shrink thus altering the appearance of the hair produced. The transformation can be dramatic, both in the amount of hair lost and the general appearance of new hair produced. For instance, those experiencing male pattern baldness may have very thick hair on the sides with thinning, unhealthy looking hair, on the top of the head and back toward the crown. This is a classic example of follicle damage propagated by the accumulation of a dihydrotestosterone deep within the follicle. Male pattern balding is responsible for nine out of ten cases of hair loss in men and about one out of every five in women.

When thick to thin hair has occurred, obviously most people will be interested in determining ways to keep their existing hair and possibly re-grow new hair. Currently the most often recommended over the counter treatment option is topical minoxidil.

Minoxidil was initially developed as a treatment for hypertension. The tablet form is still used for this purpose. Today it is wildly popular as the primary treatment for male and female pattern baldness. While no one is sure exactly how it works, what we do know is that it has the ability to reopen at least some of those damaged or rapidly closing follicles. Minoxidil is also very effective at protecting healthy hair from the ravages of male pattern balding, boasting a ninety percent success rate.

What Next? There are currently a handful of hair re-growth products (specially formulated for both men and women) which have been proven effective both in blocking harmful hormones and bringing the all important dead hair follicles back to life. These specially formulated treatments can be used both as a preventative tool, starting before hair loss becomes severe, or after loss of hair has become noticeable. If you have experienced thick to thin hair these products could be just what is needed to overcome this latest life challenge.
