How to Fertilize a Shrub
- 1). Put on plastic gloves. Apply granular fertilizer to shrubs that are watered often by sprinkling 1 pint of fertilizer per 100 square feet of garden bed. Apply fertilizer in a circle around the shrubs, extending out to just beyond the area of root growth, approximately three times wider than the branches of the shrub. Avoid applying fertilizer to the 6 inches of soil surrounding the shrub, to reduce risk of burning the trunks.
- 2). Mix the water-soluble fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions in the plastic bucket. Apply the liquid fertilizer to shrubs that are not watered frequently by pouring in a circle around the shrub, extending the fertilizer out up to three times wider than the branches of the shrub, but avoiding the 6-inch area around the trunk.
- 3). Fertilize individual 1-gallon size shrubs by sprinkling 1 tbsp. of granular fertilizer around the base of each shrub. Fertilize shrubs larger than 1 gallon, with 2 to 3 tbsp. of fertilizer per shrub.
- 4). Water the soil under the shrubs deeply immediately after fertilizing to activate the fertilizer and allow it to soak into the soil and into the root system.
