How to Make Hanging Initials for a Party
- 1). Trace letter stencils onto pieces of cardstock or freehand draw them if you have artistic abilities.
- 2). Cut out the letters.
- 3). Trace the cardstock, or the same stencils, onto the decorative paper of your choice. Use pages from a magazine, patterned stationery, construction paper or even wrapping paper to enhance the initials.
- 4). Cut out the decorative paper letters and glue them on top of the cardstock letters. This gives the initials a firm backing so they hang straight and do not bend or curl.
- 5). Punch a hole in the top of each letter, or two holes if necessary, on the top right and left sides.
- 6). Glue decorative elements to the initials to add texture and dimension. For example, adhere rhinestones, beads, seashells, ribbon, buttons or even feathers to the initials.
- 7). String strands of ribbon or fishing line through the holes in the tops of the letters, starting with the letter for the last name, followed by the middle name initial and ending with the first name initial so it is on the left. This ensures the initials hang in the correct order. Ribbon adds a splash of color to the hanging of the letters while fishing line makes the suspension of the letters almost invisible. Choose the option you prefer.
