Writting a Local History Book

105 12
Writers can collaborate with local museums and historical societies to publish local history books [http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/].
First, decide on the kind of book you want to write. Then target a few publishers who publish books similar to the one you want to write. You can also decide on self publishing but there will be sizeable upfront fees.

Ask for an information packet from the publisher as writing a local history book is somewhat different from other kinds of publishing. First you will have to set up a proposal for a book and submit it for approval. Research the general themes you would like to cover in your local history book.

Be clear in your mind about the publisher's specific directives for writing a book. There are publishers that publish only those books which fall within certain themes. Some publishers have very definite rules regarding word count, page length, and the number of illustrations. Your book must fit within these guidelines, or you will be wasting the publisher's time, and yours.

If your proposal is accepted, you will be asked to sign a contract. Be sure the deadline you set is reasonable and you do not miss it or your contract might be terminated. Visit museums, historical societies, corporate archives, libraries, and newspapers to research about your topic.

Submit your draft to your editor before your cut-off date. If you need some more time, contact your editor and inform him immediately asking for an extension. They may have kept your book into a tight schedule, or they might be able to give you some extra time. Make the necessary corrections or additions by the agreed upon deadline.

Plan events around your book's release and schedule book signings at local bookstores or museums. Build up a lecture series based on your book to help promote it. Contact local church groups, garden clubs, women's clubs, service clubs, and anyone else you can think of who might want to know about your book.
