Tools and computer products are generally portable enough for online sales, but major appliances may be more difficult for which to show a profit.

The Internet has proven itself to be an profitable venue for marketing insurance and financial products by allowing potential customers 24-hour access to those accounts. Handmade items can be marketed from even a simple website. Before you begin selling your merchandise online, research the product or field that interests you to determine whether a demand exists. The amount of demand for your products and services can be determined in many ways, including online polls, studying current trends and monitoring the websites of your competitors.

    • All businesses, online or not, must beware of excessive costs that could cause them to lag behind competitors. With an online business, you can do away with much of the overhead required to operate a physical storefront, including warehousing and the expenses associated with a physical office space. You must have the funds to begin operation, but you also must be able to keep the company going until sales and profits begin to come in.

    • A certain amount of liability is inherent in any business operation. If you do not have an actual store or office, you may be able to avoid the need for public liability insurance, but you will still need to have a procedure in place to handle product returns and failed deliveries even if the procedure is as simple as stating that "All sales are final." Internet businesses are not immune to the legalities of the physical world; they simply have fewer liabilities that must be dealt with on a regular basis.
