How to Build a Chair from a Skateboard
- 1). Mark the piece of wood that will be the back of the chair with a rectangle 2 inches deep by 5 1/4 inches wide. Center the rectangle 11 inches from the bottom of the board.
Mark the second plank 11 inches from the top of the board with a line straight across. Measure 3.5 inches in from each side of the plank on the marked line, and from there draw a straight line to the bottom of the board. This will become the seat of the chair. - 2). Cut the marked rectangle out of the first board, and drill pilot holes in the four corners of the rectangle. With the jigsaw, work slowly, cutting on marked lines from one pilot hole to the next. This will be the opening where you will insert the bottom half of the chair.
- 3). Create the seat and back leg of the plank chair by using the circular saw to cut the second board. Cut from the bottom of the board to the marked line (11 inches from top). Using either the circular saw or jigsaw, cut along the marked line. This will leave one complete piece with an 12- by 11-inch seat and a 5-inch back leg. It should be shaped like a T.
- 4). Sand both pieces of the chair with sandpaper to remove all rough areas for a smooth finish.
- 5). Prepare the used skateboards. Remove the wheels and trucks (the metal pieces) from the underside of the board with a screwdriver.
- 6). Attach the two skateboards by centering them, designed side up, horizontally across the back of the chair. The topmost skateboard should be level with or slightly above the top of the plank. Once they are positioned, drill four pilot holes in a square pattern through both the first skateboard and plank. Attach the skateboard to the plank with wood screws. Repeat with the second skateboard, attaching it just slightly below the first skateboard.
- 7). Assemble the chair by holding the back of the chair with the skateboards facing you. Insert the leg of the chair through the rectangular hole until the seat fits firmly against the back of the chair. The bottom skateboard should be just above the seat of the chair.
