The Dangers of Hyaluronic Acid

    Allergies

    • HA gel is sometimes injected in certain parts of the body (such as the lips, cheeks or thighs) to prevent those parts from aging. The injections, which are supposed to be safe and nonallergenic, are administered by a medical expert, usually in a beauty and wellness clinic. For some people, particularly those with a low threshold for pain and those who have sensitive skin, these injections can be painful and lead to redness, swelling or inflammation of the skin. Other known side effects include acne and necrosis (the premature death of cells or tissues).

    Reported Side Effects

    • Some of the side effects reported by patients who have had hyaluronic knee injections for treating HA abnormalities include coughing, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, nausea, fever, itching, nasal congestion, and skin rashes. Some have reported pain, bruising, or swelling in the area of injection while others have encountered acute headaches, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite and stomach ache.

    Contraindications

    • Certain medications such as aspirin, NSAIDs (non-steroidal inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and paracetamol), St. John's Wort, and Vitamin E supplements can increase swelling and bleeding after injections of HA. As a result, it is best to avoid these medications for at least a week prior to the injections. A good doctor will forewarn the patient about these contraindications and the possible side effects and dangers of HA.

    HA Imbalance

    • Abnormal levels of HA can occur artificially or naturally. Particularly susceptible are those with connective tissue disorders (CTDs). As with any kind of substance in the body such as hormones, proteins and nutrients, too much or too little can lead to health problems. Because of excess production, connective tissue disorders can lead to HA abnormalities that trigger health complications. These complications include mitral valve response, keratoconus, Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, stickler syndrome, Osteogenesis imperfecta, and osteoarthritis. High levels of HA have also been connected to some forms of cancer. In general, healthy people have a healthy dose of HA circulating in their bodies and hardly need supplementation.

    Symptomatic

    • HA abnormality is usually indicative of a connective tissue disorder and is a symptom rather than a primary medical condition. When the main problem is treated, such as osteoarthritis and muscle contractures, HA production and distribution will most likely go back to normal levels.
